📄 Family Host — Role Description

What does a Family Host do?

Your job is to show up, be friendly, and engage with families and particularly children at Weavers events. That means:

  • Set up toys, snacks, and other activity supplies before the event
  • Welcoming newcomers and helping them feel comfortable
  • Keeping the energy flowing if things get quiet (start a conversation, share something you've been exploring, or invite others to do the same)
  • Maintain a safe environment for all children present
  • Clean up after the kids leave

What we're looking for in a Host

You must be able to pass a criminal background check as well as basic Youth Protection Training. There is a $20 fee for this package.

Friendliness and ability to interact with children are essential. You don't have to be a certified teacher or anything, but you do need to enjoy playing with children and be comfortable with disabilities, neurodivergent approaches to play and learning, and "children" who may be old enough to legally drink.

What to bring

Depending on the event, you might want to bring some of your own books, toys, or craft supplies from home. However, Weavers will provide everything necessary for a successful event.

The space

Events are generally held in the Library and Sensory Room at Weavers of the Web (unless otherwise noted in the task description). Expect 1-2 tables, comfortable and low-key. Toys and craft supplies are always available.

Attendance

Attendance varies. When an event is running consistently and fully staffed, you can expect more families. If you're hosting a newly-relaunched or less-publicized date, it may be quieter. (Don't forget to share the event with your friends to boost attendance!) Please plan to stay for the full event, regardless of turnout; guests can arrive at any point during drop-in events.

Logistics

  • Solo hosting unless otherwise noted, although friends/partners are welcome to join in
  • No preparation required beyond showing up ready to engage
  • A check-in process for guests is coming soon; details will be communicated when it's in place.

Day-of issues

If you're running late, have an emergency, or need to cancel, contact Solinox directly as soon as possible.
