What does an Altar Tender do?

Altar Tenders are in charge of setting up, maintaining, and respectfully deconstructing our ritual altars, as well as our individual deity altars in ritual shrines and on Shrine Row. That means:

• Packing supplies, including deity statues, with appropriate care and reverence
• Setting up tables and chairs as needed, including quarter, altar, and other functional tables
• Decorating the altars with appropriate colors, decorations, statues, tools, and offerings

• Monitoring the altar during the event for attendee interactions

  • Answer questions about the altar
  • Politely remind attendees about respectful behavior
  • Quickly and discreetly remove any inappropriate items that may appear
• Disposing of any offerings in a timely and respectful fashion (immediately after a ritual, or weekly for ongoing shrines)
• Disassembling altars and shrines at the end of ritual events 
• Returning any borrowed items to their permanent homes after ritual events

What we're looking for in an Altar Tender

You must be familiar with the energies involved in the altar you sign up to tend. 

• For quarter altars, you should understand the elements, their elementals, and the other associations with that quarter.
• For ritual altars, you should understand the correspondences and mysteries associated with the ritual, as well as the correspondences associated with any deities being called.
• For shrines, you should be familiar with the deity and their correspondences, stories, kennings, and other associations.

What to bring

You can bring any items that you feel would enhance the appearance of your altar and deepen the understanding and connection of those who see and interact with it. As always, Weavers will provide all necessary supplies, including access to a variety of supplies and offerings you can work with in setting up your altar.

The space

Events are generally held either at Weavers of the Web's physical building on Center Street or the Fenner Center's scout campground (unless otherwise noted in the task description). 

Attendance

Expect 20-50 attendees at most rituals. Shrine attendance is variable, but all of our active shrines receive regular interaction and will need to be maintained on a monthly basis at minimum.

Logistics

• This job blends energetic connections, magickal understanding, and some artistic skill
• Make sure to coordinate with clergy about the details for each event
• A check-in process for guests is coming soon; details will be communicated when it's in place.
