📄 Fire Tender — Role Description

What does a Fire Tender do?

Fire Tenders are in charge of building, lighting, supervising, and ultimately extinguishing our ritual fires. That means:

  • Acquiring any necessary firewood (either yourself or through Purchase Order with Weavers)
  • Building the fire before ritual begins, usually a log cabin style bonfire with offerings inside
  • Handling any needed accelerants or accessories (such as torches and lighters) for the ritual
  • Staying with the fire while it is lit (or handing off that duty responsibly for breaks)
  • Supervising people's interactions with the fire, making sure that it is treated with respect and safety
  • Answering questions about sacred fire tending
  • Fully extinguishing the fire at the end of the evening, after securing a coal to save for next time

What we're looking for in a Fire Tender

You must be able to light a fire from scratch, and be familiar with the energies involved in sacred fire tending. This is not your everyday campfire. You should be comfortable working with fire and very familiar with fire safety. You should be prepared to handle first aid for burns.

What to bring

If you have preferred fire-tending tools, feel free to bring and use them. Weavers will be able to provide firewood and other necessary accessories.

The space

Events are generally held at the Fenner Center's scout campground (unless otherwise noted in the task description).

Attendance

Expect 20-50 attendees at most rituals. There will almost always be small children and blind adults in attendance, among other people hazards, so stay alert.

Logistics

  • This is a dirty, smoky, hands-on job; you should love fire
  • Make sure to coordinate with clergy about the details for each event
  • A check-in process for guests is coming soon; details will be communicated when it's in place.

Day-of issues

If you're running late, have an emergency, or need to cancel, contact Solinox directly as soon as possible.
