Litha

Summer Solstice

I will do the hard things, knowing I might fail.

About this Oath

The six-pointed star represents the union of opposing forces, now in balance and working together toward a common goal. In our tradition, this is the symbol of manifestation, of challenges and overcoming obstacles. Every time we try new things and fail, we have an opportunity to learn and do better next time ... and we always have the chance of success! It's a win-win situation.

Courage and bravery include making mistakes and repairing them. We never know when we set out on a path what the outcome is really going to be. We have an idea that we are aiming for, but the Gods and the Universe may have different plans. If we wait for certainty before we act, we'll never get anything done. So we act ... and then we accept the consequences of our actions. Even (or perhaps especially) when those consequences are unexpected, harmful, and otherwise most definitely NOT what we intended.

Nobody is perfect, but everybody is capable of learning and growth. Part of what we are saying when we step up to take the Rites of Passage challenge at Litha is that we will own that responsibility for the consequences of our actions. We'll clean up our own messes to the best of our ability, and learn from our mistakes so we can do better going forward.

As witches, we choose to make use of our power to manifest our will in the world. Those choices that we make and the journey they take us through are more important than the destination we may never reach.

What it means to us

Read what our community says about this oath

The success or failure of a Rite of Passage doesn't always hinge on whether or not a given task was completely correctly. Sometimes what is more important is how the task was done, and how the candidate behaved and reacted during the trial.
